How a European automotive OEM established a 48-hour just-in-time supply chain from Tangier Free Zone to its Spanish assembly plant — with zero EU import duties.
The Challenge
A French automotive OEM was sourcing wiring harnesses and interior components from Eastern Europe. Rising labor costs and supply chain fragility post-COVID pushed them to evaluate Morocco's Tangier Free Zone. But they needed JIT delivery within 48 hours to their Zaragoza assembly plant — a standard that seemed impossible from Africa.
Their previous logistics partner quoted 7-day ocean transit from Tanger Med to Barcelona plus 2 days inland — far too slow for JIT manufacturing. They needed a logistics partner who understood both Moroccan export procedures and EU automotive compliance requirements.
Our Solution
Suaid Global designed a hybrid corridor combining short-sea ferry crossing (Tanger Med to Algeciras, under 2 hours) with dedicated ground transport from Algeciras to Zaragoza (8 hours). Total door-to-door: under 14 hours for express loads, 24-36 hours for standard.
Our customs team handled EUR.1 movement certificates ensuring 0% EU import duty under the EU-Morocco Association Agreement. We set up pre-clearance procedures with Spanish customs to eliminate border delays, and installed GPS tracking on every truck for real-time JIT visibility.
The Results
The OEM achieved 48-hour JIT delivery with 99.7% on-time performance. Component costs dropped 22% versus their Eastern European supplier, combining lower Moroccan labor costs with zero EU duties. The Tanger Med to Algeciras crossing takes under 2 hours — the shortest sea crossing between Africa and Europe.
The OEM has since expanded to ship 3 additional component families from Tangier, with Suaid Global managing all cross-Mediterranean logistics.
