What changes the plan

Customs requirementsUS exports to India need AES/EEI filing. This applies for shipments over $2,500, or for any shipment that needs an export license. Indian customs adds its own steps too, on the India side. A licensed Indian customs broker, or clearing agent, must file a Bill of Entry (BE). This goes through ICEGATE, the Indian Customs EDI system. Goods on the restricted list, under India's Import Policy, need an Import License first. Many regulated products need BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification too — this covers electronics, chemicals, toys, and more. Food products need FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority) approval. Medical devices and medicine need CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organization) approval as well. Every import must show the right ITC-HS code, right on the Bill of Entry.
Tariff and duty treatmentIndia's import duty has a few layers, stacked one on top of the other. Basic Customs Duty (BCD) usually runs 7.5–30% on manufactured goods, and it runs higher on some consumer goods — 20% on electronic appliances, and 100%+ on cars. Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS) adds 10% of BCD on top. Integrated GST (IGST) adds 5–28% more, applied on CIF plus BCD plus SWS. Add it all up, and total effective duty can range from 20% to 60%+ for many goods. No US–India FTA is in force right now. The US side suspended India's GSP benefits back in 2019. Defense equipment may get help from offset deals, or from government-to-government buying programs, which can change the standard duty rules.
Carrier-neutral routingOptions are compared by schedule, transshipment risk, customs exposure and final delivery, not by carrier preference.

FAQ

United States to India, answered.

Planning answers from the corridor profile. A dated quote confirms the route, carrier and customs assumptions for your shipment.

Ocean freight from the USA to India takes 25–35 days. From Los Angeles to JNPT (Mumbai), transit runs about 25–28 days, on trans-Pacific services via the Suez Canal. From New York to Mumbai, it takes 28–35 days, on North Atlantic and Indian Ocean routing. Air freight from US airports to Mumbai, Delhi, or Chennai takes 4–7 days. Indian customs clearance adds 3–10 more days on top, depending on the goods category and any extra certificates you need.
The USA's top exports to India cover a few key sectors. Aircraft and parts lead the list — India's aviation sector is booming, with big Airbus and Boeing orders. Defense equipment ranks high too; the US has been India's top defense supplier in recent years. Other top exports include petroleum products and LNG, chemicals, oil seeds like soybeans and cotton seed, medical devices, scrap metal, and tech products. India is one of the fastest-growing US export markets around.
ICEGATE (Indian Customs EDI Gateway) is India's online customs clearance system. Every Indian import runs through ICEGATE, using a Bill of Entry (BE) filed by a licensed Indian Customs Broker (CB). The BE lists a few key things: importer details, a goods description with the ITC-HS code, the declared customs value, and the duty math. Indian customs may run document checks, lab tests, or a hands-on look at the goods. Suaid Global partners with licensed Indian Customs Brokers, at all the major Indian ports.
Yes. India's BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification is required, and it covers a wide range of products. This includes electronics — IT gear, LED lights, some appliances — plus chemicals, and other regulated groups. Under a program called BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme), goods need a certificate from a BIS-recognized test lab, before they can enter India and go on sale. If a product lacks valid BIS certification, Indian customs will hold it back. Suaid Global advises US exporters on the exact BIS rules for their product types.
Indian import duties on US manufactured goods usually stack three layers. First, Basic Customs Duty (BCD), at 7.5–30%. Second, Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS), at 10% of BCD. Third, IGST (GST on imports), at 5–28%. For a product with BCD at 20% and IGST at 18%, the total effective rate can reach about 44–48% of CIF value. Some sectors face higher rates — cars pay 100%+, and some electronics face an effective 20–40%. Our pre-shipment cost calculator gives you real numbers.
Yes. US defense exports to India fall under two sets of rules. The first is ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), run by the State Department. The second is EAR (Export Administration Regulations), which covers dual-use items under BIS. Every single defense item needs an export license. India holds status as a Major Defense Partner (MDP) of the USA, and this speeds up some license reviews. India's own Defense Acquisition Procedure asks for offset deals, on its large defense contracts. Suaid Global works with defense trade compliance experts, on both ITAR and EAR export licensing.
