Shipping to and from Indonesia.

Southeast Asia's largest economy and natural resources hub. Our partner network manages imports through Jakarta and Surabaya with full Indonesian customs clearance and island distribution.

Overview

Indonesia freight, coordinated across the whole operating thread.

Indonesia is Southeast Asia's largest economy and a major exporter of palm oil, coal, tin, rubber, and textiles. The country imports machinery, vehicles, electronics, chemicals, and fuel. Indonesian customs is complex and slow (7–14 days typical at major ports). Corruption and bureaucratic inefficiency are common challenges. Jakarta (Tanjung Priok) is the primary port; Surabaya serves East Java. Port congestion is chronic. Air freight through Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) and Ngurah Rai (Bali) handles urgent shipments. The archipelago nature requires careful planning for multi-island distribution. Our partner network includes experienced Indonesian brokers.

Indonesia's customs (Bea dan Cukai) is notoriously slow and bureaucratic. All imports require API (Angka Pengenal Importir - import identification) and pre-notification 5–10 days before arrival. Import duty varies widely (5–40% depending on HS code). VAT 10% standard. Food requires BPOM approval; pharma requires BPOM pre-clearance. Common delays and requests for 'facilitation fees'. Clearance typically 7–14 days; some items 21+ days. Our partner network includes experienced brokers who navigate bureaucratic challenges.

Import setup

Getting your Indonesian import file right before you book

Indonesia checks who is importing before it looks at what arrived. So sort the importer side first. Cargo that lands without it simply waits, and the storage clock does not wait with it. These six points cover the setup work.

  • A named importer of record — A company registered in Indonesia has to own the entry. An overseas seller cannot import in their own name.
  • The importer identification number — The API number ties a company to the goods it may bring in. Check that it covers your product line before you ship.
  • Product standard marking — Many goods need SNI conformity before they can clear. Arranging it after arrival is slow and it costs a lot more.
  • Restricted goods screening — Indonesia keeps lists of goods that need a ministry permit. Screen your item against them while you are still quoting.
  • One consistent description — The invoice, the packing list, and the declaration must describe the same thing in the same words. Small wording gaps trigger queries.
  • Local-language labelling — Retail goods usually need Indonesian labels. Doing this at origin costs far less than doing it at the port.
Gateways

Which Indonesian gateway suits your cargo

Indonesia is a country of islands, so your gateway sets the length of the domestic leg. Match the entry point to the buyer, not to the sailing schedule. A cheap ocean rate into the wrong port is not a cheap shipment.

GatewayServesTrade-off
Tanjung Priok (Jakarta)Greater Jakarta and the industrial belt of western JavaThe main national gateway, so yard pressure is the usual risk
SurabayaEast Java, Bali, and the eastern island networkFewer direct long-haul calls, so transhipment is common
MedanNorth Sumatra, palm oil, and bulk flowsSet up for commodities more than for mixed consumer cargo
Soekarno-Hatta AirportUrgent parts and high-value goods for JakartaAir terminal handling adds steps at both ends of the trip
Ngurah Rai AirportBali and onward distribution to the eastCargo capacity rides largely on passenger flights
Island legs

Planning the domestic leg across an archipelago

Landing the container is only half the job here. Getting it to the buyer often needs a second move by sea or road. Price that leg when you quote, not when it bites. Buyers outside Java feel this most.

  • Expect to break bulk at the gateway — Full containers are often stripped near the port. The goods then reload into smaller units for the island leg.
  • Domestic sea legs run their own schedule — Inter-island services sail less often than the ocean carrier that brought you in. Missing one sailing can cost a week.
  • Check road and bridge limits — Ask before you plan an oversized or very heavy piece. Access varies a lot between regions and seasons.
  • Weather thins the sailing list — Rough-sea months cut small-vessel departures. Build slack into the delivery promise you give your customer.
  • Storage clocks keep running — Free time at the port does not pause while you wait for a domestic boat to load.
  • Consolidate where you can — Several small orders often travel better as one LCL shipment than as separate parcels.
Cost control

Where Indonesian import costs quietly grow

The freight rate is rarely what makes an Indonesian shipment expensive. These charges are. They all start small and they all grow by the day.

ChargeWhat triggers itHow to keep it small
DemurrageThe container sits inside the terminal past its free daysFile the declaration before the vessel arrives, not after
DetentionYou hold the empty box too long after you collect itBook the empty return slot when you book the delivery
Port storageCargo waits in the shed after the container is strippedLine up the truck and the warehouse for the same day
Inspection handlingCustoms pull the container for a physical checkPack so goods can be seen without unloading everything
Amendment feesA document has to be corrected after it was filedCheck names, weights, and codes before anything is lodged
Rework and relabellingPacks arrive without compliant local labelsLabel at origin, where the cost per carton is lower
Regulated cargo

Cargo classes that need more than the standard file

Indonesia treats several everyday categories as regulated goods. If yours is on this list, start the approvals before you confirm the order. Approvals rarely move faster than the ship does.

  • Food and drink. Expect health authority registration, ingredient detail, and an approved label before release.
  • Cosmetics and supplements. These are handled as regulated products, not as ordinary consumer goods.
  • Electrical and electronic goods. Conformity marking and a clear technical description are the usual asks.
  • Used machinery. Age, condition, and intended use all get questioned, and some categories are not allowed.
  • Chemicals. A safety data sheet, the UN number, and the packing group must travel with the booking.
  • Textiles and apparel. Fibre content and origin detail drive the tariff line, so describe them fully.
  • Toys and children's items. Safety marking and material detail are usually checked before release.
