Shipping to and from Chile.
South America's most stable economy and free-trade champion. Our partner network navigates Chile's modern ports and clears cargo for the mining, agriculture, and retail sectors.
Chile freight, coordinated across the whole operating thread.
Chile is South America's most developed economy ($380B+ GDP), known for mining (copper, lithium), agriculture (fruit, wine), and political stability. The country has extensive free trade agreements (USA, EU, China, ASEAN, etc.), making tariffs competitive. Logistics to Chile involves three main ports: Valparaiso (near Santiago, 45% volume), San Antonio (south of Santiago, 45% volume), and Iquique (far north, 10% volume). Port clearance is fast and efficient (2–3 days standard), a stark contrast to other South American countries. Ground distribution from ports to Santiago (central Chile) is 120 km (2 hours) and well-developed. Customs (SAT) are professional and streamlined. Import tariff: 0–6% typical (lowest in South America due to FTAs). Our partner network operates in Valparaiso and Santiago and clears 180+ containers monthly.
SAT (Servicio de Aduanas) administers Chilean customs via SIM (Sistema de Información de Aduanas). Import declaration required. Tariff: 0–6% typical (among lowest in South America due to extensive FTAs; China/USA: 0%, EU: 6%). NO import licenses required for most goods. Port clearance: FAST. 2–3 days at Valparaiso/San Antonio. Iquique: duty-free zone for re-export. No additional health/environmental inspections typical. Professional, efficient process. Our licensed customs broker partners file SIM declarations and apply FTA benefits to minimize duties.

What moves through Chile.
The freight plan changes by product category, Incoterm, customs regime and gateway. These are the trade patterns already documented for this market.
Chile's low duty only helps if you can prove origin
Chile has agreements with many markets. Each one has its own proof, and customs will ask to see it.
- Know which agreement applies — The same product can qualify under more than one deal. Pick the one with the better rate.
- The proof format differs — Some partners use a certificate. Others accept a signed statement on the invoice.
- Direct transport — Goods traded or reworked in a third country can lose the preference on the way.
- Watch the dates — The proof has to be valid when the goods arrive. A late document may still work, so ask.
- Keep the supplier declarations — Verification comes later. Hold the file for as long as the agreement requires.
- No proof, no relief — Without it you pay the general rate, and a refund is never automatic.
Plant, animal and food cargo: who checks what
Chile protects its farming and fruit exports hard. Border checks on organic material are thorough and they are not negotiable.
| Cargo | Control | Document to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh fruit and vegetables | Plant health inspection | A phytosanitary certificate from the origin authority |
| Seeds and live plants | Permit before shipping | The permit, plus a phytosanitary certificate |
| Meat, dairy and animal feed | Veterinary control | A health certificate from an approved establishment |
| Processed food | Health review on entry | The ingredient list and Spanish labelling |
| Wood packing and pallets | Treatment check | The ISPM 15 mark, stamped and still legible |
| Used machinery | Cleanliness inspection | Proof of washing. Soil and plant debris cause rejection. |
When the northern free zone is the right answer
The free zone at Iquique lets you hold stock without paying import charges until the goods enter Chile. It suits regional distribution.
- Hold stock, defer the charges — Goods sit in the zone. The charges fall due when they enter the country.
- Re-export to neighbours — The zone serves the wider Andean market, so one stock pool can feed several countries.
- Light handling is allowed — Labelling, kitting and repacking are usually possible. Confirm the limits for your product.
- Activity runs through a zone operator — Everything you do inside the zone runs under an authorised operator, so line that up before you ship.
- Match entries to real demand — You bring stock into the country as orders land, instead of guessing at the purchase stage.
- Distance is the cost — The zone sits far from the centre of the country. Price the inland leg before you commit.
Valparaíso, San Antonio, and the road to Santiago
The two central ports serve the same market. The difference shows up in the road leg and in terminal pressure. Weigh the ocean freight options before you fix the port.
- Same market, two doors — Both ports feed the central region. Ask which one your carrier really calls.
- The road leg can beat the rate — A cheaper port with a longer haul often ends up costing more in total.
- Terminal appointments — Pickup slots are booked in advance. A missed slot can cost you a day.
- Reefer plugs — Chilled and frozen cargo needs power on arrival. Confirm it is available before booking.
- Northern mining cargo — Project and mining freight often works better through a northern port than through the centre.
Small things that hold Chilean entries
Clearance in Chile is usually quick. These are the details that make it slow anyway.
- Spanish labelling missing — Consumer goods need Spanish information. Fix it at origin, not at the port.
- An invoice with no trade term — State the term and the named place. It drives the customs value.
- A certificate naming the wrong buyer — The party on the origin certificate must match the importer on the entry.
- Crates and dunnage forgotten — The treatment rule covers crates, blocking and loose dunnage, not only pallets. One raw offcut can hold the whole container.
- A late permit for food cargo — Permits are requested before departure. After arrival is too late.
