Frequently Asked Questions
What container sizes do you offer?
We work with standard ISO containers: 20' GP (general purpose), 40' GP, 40' HC (high cube, 9'6" tall), 20'/40' Reefer (refrigerated), 20'/40' OT (open top for oversized), and 20'/40' FR (flat rack for heavy/wide cargo). We source the right equipment for your cargo.
Can you help me decide between FCL and LCL?
Yes. As a rule of thumb: if your cargo exceeds 15–20 CBM or you want exclusive container use, FCL is more cost-effective. Below that, LCL consolidation saves money. We calculate the break-even point for each shipment and recommend accordingly.
What is a reefer container and when do I need one?
A reefer (refrigerated) container maintains controlled temperature (-30°C to +30°C) during transit. Required for perishables, pharmaceuticals, certain chemicals, and temperature-sensitive electronics. We manage reefer bookings, temperature settings, and pre-cooling coordination.
What is a SOC (Shipper Owned Container)?
A Shipper Owned Container (SOC) is a container purchased by the shipper rather than leased from a shipping line. SOCs eliminate demurrage and detention charges, provide flexibility for storage at destination, and are cost-effective for one-way trade lanes where repositioning empty containers is expensive.
When should I buy a container vs lease one?
Buying (SOC) makes sense when you ship frequently on the same lane, need extended storage at destination, or face high detention charges. Leasing (COC — Carrier Owned Container) is better for occasional shipments, round-trip trades, or when you don't want to manage container repositioning. We analyze your trade patterns to recommend the optimal approach.
What condition options are available when buying containers?
Containers are available in several conditions: New (one-trip) containers that have made a single voyage from the factory, Grade A (wind and water tight with minimal cosmetic wear), Grade B (functional but with more cosmetic damage), and As-Is containers suitable for storage but not ocean transport.
How do you handle container repositioning?
Repositioning moves empty containers to where they are needed. Suaid Global leverages our global network to minimize repositioning costs by matching empty containers with cargo flows, arranging triangulation moves, and negotiating with shipping lines for competitive repositioning rates.
Can containers be modified for special cargo?
Yes. Containers can be modified with additional ventilation, insulation, internal partitions, shelving, lighting, and reinforced floors. We also source specialized containers like flat racks, open tops, tank containers, and reefers for cargo that doesn't fit standard dry containers.
What are container detention and demurrage charges?
Demurrage is charged when a container stays at the port or terminal beyond the free time. Detention is charged when a container is held outside the port (at your warehouse) beyond the allowed time. These charges can escalate quickly. Using SOC containers or our warehousing services helps avoid these costly fees.
Do you offer container leasing for short-term needs?
Yes. We offer flexible container leasing for short-term projects, seasonal demand spikes, or one-way shipments. Lease terms range from a single trip to multi-year agreements, with options for dry, reefer, and specialty containers in various sizes.
