How Much Does It Cost to Ship from India to the USA? What Sets the Price
Summary: The US arrival fees are published and dated. Clearit lists USD 149.95 per ocean entry, USD 129.95 per air entry and USD 25 handling, checked September 12, 2026. As of September 23, 2026, the freight indexes this site cites do not price India to the USA, so your quote sets the freight.
Some market price references on this page date from September 12, 2026 or earlier. Market prices change, so confirm the current value in your quote.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship from India to the USA?
The total cost has three parts. First comes the freight, by ocean, LCL or air. Then come the charges at each end, such as port handling, brokerage and delivery. Last come US duties and fees, which depend on the product.
As of September 23, 2026, the public indexes this site cites do not cover India to the USA. Drewry’s index has eight routes, and none starts in India. The Freightos air figures cover the Far East. So this page gives no India freight number. It shows each cost line and who sets it.
Suaid Global coordinates the shipment through partner carriers and licensed customs brokers selected for the request. Price and timing are confirmed in the written quote. Use the table below to check that a quote covers each line.
| Cost line | Who publishes it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean or air freight | The carrier or forwarder, in the quote | Rate, currency, unit, validity and the surcharges included |
| Charges in India | The origin agent or terminal, in the quote | Pickup, export clearance, port handling and documents |
| US customs brokerage | The customs broker’s price list | Fee per entry, handling fee and the HTS lines included |
| US duties and fees | The US tariff schedule and CBP rules | HTS code, origin, customs value and entry date |
| Handling and delivery in the USA | The carrier, terminal or trucker | Free time, delivery address and waiting time |
Ocean Freight: Price per Container
A full container load (FCL) gives you a whole box. You pay per container, not per CBM. The usual choices are a 20ft box, a 40ft box and a 40ft High Cube for light, bulky goods.
None of the indexes this site cites gives a dated container price from India to the USA as of September 23, 2026. The dated benchmarks on this site cover routes from Shanghai. You can read them in the FCL container price guide. Do not use a China price as a stand-in for India.
Your quote should name the two ports, the box type and the sailing. It should also say which surcharges are in the rate. The pairs below are examples to request, not prices.
| Origin | Destination | Price basis |
|---|---|---|
| Nhava Sheva, IndiaQuote this route | New York, USA | Quote per container type |
| Nhava Sheva, IndiaQuote this route | Los Angeles, USA | Quote per container type |
| Chennai, IndiaQuote this route | Los Angeles, USA | Quote per container type |
US East Coast and West Coast ports use different routes. Ask which service and which transfer port, if any, the quote uses. The reverse trip needs its own quote.
LCL: Price per CBM and the W/M Rule
LCL means your goods share a box with other cargo. The rate is per W/M unit. One unit is 1 CBM or 1,000 kg, whichever is larger. A minimum charge often applies, and the carrier may round up.
Take a load of 1.8 CBM that weighs 770 kg. By weight, that is 0.77 units. By volume, it is 1.8 units. The larger figure counts, so the freight is 1.8 times the quoted rate. Add the CFS fees at each end that the quote lists.
For more on this lane, see the India to USA LCL page. The LCL cost guide explains minimums, CFS fees and the dated LCL figures for other routes.
Air Freight: Price per Chargeable Kg
Air freight is billed per chargeable kg. The carrier compares gross weight with volume weight and bills the larger. A common IATA rule divides the volume in cm³ by 6,000. Some express services use 5,000, so check the rule in your quote.
Take the same load of 1.8 CBM. That is 1,800,000 cm³. Divided by 6,000, it gives 300 kg of volume weight. The gross weight is 770 kg, so the chargeable weight is 770 kg. The rate per kg, the minimum and any rounding come from the quote.
The Freightos air figures cited on this site cover the Far East, not India. So this page gives no India air price. The air freight cost guide shows the dated figures for the routes it covers.
Costs at Destination
These US examples come from price lists that suppliers publish. They were checked on September 12, 2026. They are published supplier examples, not a Suaid Global tariff. Charleston, used below, is one of the US calls on the India service cited in the transit section.
| Charge | Published amount or rule | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean customs brokerage, per entry (3 HTS codes and 1 invoice) | USD 149.95 | Clearit, checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| Air customs brokerage, per entry | USD 129.95 | Clearit, checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| Mandatory handling, per transaction | USD 25 | Clearit, checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| ISF filed on time, per filing | USD 50 | Clearit, checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| Continuous customs bond, per year | USD 500 | Clearit, checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| Import demurrage in Charleston, per container and calendar day: first 3 charged days / next 3 / after | USD 260 / 335 / 440 | Hapag-Lloyd, in effect from Jan 1, 2026; checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| Import detention, US without California, per container and calendar day: first 3 charged days / next 3 / after | USD 200 / 250 / 300 | Hapag-Lloyd, in effect from Oct 1, 2025; checked Sep 12, 2026 |
| Duties, MPF and HMF | Set by the product, its value and CBP rules | Confirm on the entry |
Clearit excludes duties, MPF/HMF, disbursements, agency and extra services from base brokerage. The Hapag-Lloyd demurrage and detention examples apply to import merchant haulage, after free time, with the box types each schedule names. Other ports, carriers and terms differ. The ocean freight cost guide lists the same figures.
Duties and Tariffs
US duty depends on the product’s HTS code, its origin, its customs value and the entry date. There is no single rate for goods from India. Check the official US tariff schedule with a licensed customs broker.
The US tariff guide on this site was reviewed on September 12, 2026. On the Section 122 surcharge, it states: “The 10% Section 122 surcharge expired on July 24, 2026.”
On Section 301, the same guide states: “Since July 24, 2026, a separate Section 301 action covers 60 economies at 10% or 12.5%, with product exemptions.”
For metal goods, the guide adds: “Covered steel, aluminum and copper articles can face 50%; other treatments include 10%, 15% and 25%.”
Check the annexes and the full HTS line for your product. This page gives no product duty rate. The broker confirms it on the entry.
Transit Time: What the Schedule Covers
Sailing time is only one part of the trip. Cargo also needs time for pickup, export clearance, US customs and delivery. So a schedule is not a door-to-door promise.
One published example is CMA CGM’s INDAMEX service, checked on September 23, 2026. Its schedule lists Nhava Sheva on day 1 and New York on day 38. That is 37 days, port to port. On the same schedule, Mundra is day 4, Norfolk day 41 and Savannah day 44.
This is one service on one date. Other services, and routes to the US West Coast, use other paths and times. The quote confirms the service and the sailing date.
| Stage | Included in the sailing time? |
|---|---|
| Pickup from the supplier and transport to the port | No |
| Export customs clearance in India | No |
| LCL loading at the origin CFS | No |
| Sailing from the loading port to the US port | Yes |
| Unloading and release at the US terminal | No |
| US customs entry and any agency hold | No |
| Trucking to the delivery address | No |
What Changes the Price
- Season and carrier notices — Carriers change rates and add surcharges by notice. Ask for the validity date of each quote.
- Route — The path the ship takes, and any canal on it, affects the sailing time and some surcharges. The Red Sea shipping guide explains the Suez routing issue.
- Density — Light, bulky goods are billed by volume. Heavy, dense goods are billed by weight. The W/M rule and the air divisor decide which one counts.
- Dangerous goods — Chemicals, batteries and some medical goods need declared handling. That can add fees or limit the services on offer. See the dangerous goods guide.
- Minimum charges — A small LCL or air load may pay the minimum, not the rate times the units.
- Incoterm — Under FOB, the buyer pays from the Indian port. Under EXW, the buyer also pays pickup and export steps. Agree the term before you compare quotes.
- Pickup and delivery — An inland factory adds a truck leg in India. A US address far from the port adds a truck leg too.
- Free time — Demurrage and detention start when free time ends. See the demurrage and detention guide.
Worked Budget Example
This is an illustration, not a quote. It uses 1.8 CBM and 770 kg, with the rates left as blanks for your quote.
- Measure the cargo: Record the packed size and the gross weight, with pallets. Here the load is 1.8 CBM and 770 kg. The CBM calculator helps with volume.
- Work out the LCL units: 1.8 CBM is more than 0.77 tonnes, so the load counts as 1.8 W/M units. LCL freight is 1.8 times your quoted rate, or the minimum if that is higher.
- Work out the air weight: 1,800,000 cm³ divided by 6,000 is 300 kg. The gross weight of 770 kg is higher. So air freight is 770 times your quoted rate per kg.
- Add the US brokerage example: Clearit lists USD 149.95 per ocean entry, or USD 129.95 per air entry, plus USD 25 handling. These were checked on September 12, 2026.
- Add duties and fees: Ask the broker to estimate duty, MPF and HMF from the HTS code and the customs value.
- Compare complete quotes: Put each quote on the same basis. Count each charge once, and note what each quote leaves out.
